Electrical Panel Procurement Guide for EPC Contractors

Electrical Panel Procurement Guide for EPC Contractors

Procuring electrical panels for large industrial projects involves far more than getting the lowest price. This guide helps EPC contractors avoid the most common and costly procurement mistakes.

Start with a Detailed Technical Specification

The foundation of successful panel procurement is a comprehensive technical specification covering: enclosure standard (IS 8623/IEC 61439), busbar rating, short circuit level, IP rating, main component brands, control voltage, wiring standards, testing requirements, and documentation package.

Type Test Certificates are Non-Negotiable

Always require type test certificates from an accredited laboratory (CPRI, ERDA) for the specific design configuration being supplied. Generic type test certificates that do not match the actual configuration are a major red flag and do not comply with IEC 61439.

Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)

A rigorous FAT at the manufacturer's facility, witnessed by your project engineer, catches wiring errors, component issues, and specification non-compliance before the panel reaches site. The cost of FAT travel is trivial compared to site rectification costs.

Delivery and Logistics Planning

Large PCC and MCC assemblies are delicate. Specify wooden crate packing, moisture-proof wrapping, and shock indicators. Plan crane and forklift requirements at site before delivery date. Last-minute logistics planning is the most common cause of project delays.
